Re: Note regarding  "Basaltic Flooding of Planetary Landscapes" and "Exploring the Martian Desert" talks at CSULA.

Dear Gary, / Many thanks for making the trip to Los Angeles and making two presentations at Cal State LA. You really went all out and I greatly appreciate it. I enjoyed both talks tremendously. One of the fun things was how much discussion you stirred up. Lots of people were still discussing it in the hallways yesterday and my students were still hot on the topic this morning. ... Sincerely, Bob

Re: Response to e-mail message regarding footnote 9 (now deleted).

Hi Gary. / Yes, I LOVE Summer. I have been giving talks myself, at UC Irvine and the Evolution meetings in Indiana in June and next week at American Malacological Society meetings in San Francisco. I know what you mean about how crowded the audience is. It makes a huge difference, Your seminar here certainly was among the top seminars of our academic year 99-00 as well. Thanks for the positive comments. / Cheers, Doug

Re: Response to e-mail regarding program, and image of your's truely on RAS web site.

... Your last talk got a lot of compliments from a number of the regulars who hear all our speakers and I know you are one of the favorites (Bill Lennartz our web master agrees, that's probably why your picture graces our page!). ...

Re: Note regarding TAAA "Collisions of Comets and Planets" lecture and answer to question regarding Mars.

Hi Gary- / I want to thank you for the great lecture you gave Friday night. Your enthusiasm for your subject really shows. I especially appreciated your comments in response to the question about terra-forming Mars. I tried explaining to one of our members a while back the simple fact that Mars isn't massive enough to hold onto an earth-like atmosphere. He didn't completely agree with my argument and still thought we could make the atmosphere of Mars more earthlike by melting the frozen permafrost layers that are believed to be present. (I assume that would be the same argument as adding water by way of a large comet.) He never considered the mass issue.  ...

Re: Response to e-mail note concerning Influential Professors section.

Gary: / What a fine Web page(s) you have put together! You had earlier sent me the address for The Independent Planetologist, and I had it listed on my "Favorites" from Internet Explorer. You are so far ahead of me--I'm poor on acronyms such as TIP ... . In any case, your clear instructions in your recent E-mail messages let me go beyond your home page to the many interesting AND moving commentaries on people you have known or who have had profound influence on your life. What a set of genuine tributes from your heart! ...

Hi Gary, / The Society has really enjoyed the two programs that you have given, the first on Meteorites, and the second on Exploring the Martian Desert. These were both fun topics and a little out of the ordinary -- which is a good thing! ... It is long past time that we made you an Honorary Member of our Society. ...

Re: E-mail note regarding "Geologic Case for Life on Mars" presentation.

... I had hoped you would make it out of here before 3:30 because traffic is more manageable then, but your talk brought out so many questions and comments you were delayed. A victum of your own success. The 10 (Interstate) can be pretty awful and Friday is especially bad. / Thanks again for the talk. It was great, and the audience was quite large. / Mary

Re: Comment regarding transferred e-mail note to Eric Cheney.

Hello Gary--Eric Cheney directed me to your reminiscences about Mackin, Misch, and Wheeler. As I told Eric, they were a joy to read. I think the only person left around here who remembers what these fellows were like as professors is Joe Vance, who, by the way, comes in every day to work on fission tracks. I'm sure that some remember the three from their outward appearances and behavior, but your capsules reveal much more of their nature. / Thanks for doing this, and best regards, / Darrel

Re: Thank you note for "Exploring the Lunar Landscape" presentation.

Dear Gary, / Thanks for making another presentation at Cal State LA. I really enjoyed it and appreciate your different interpretation of things such as the origin of the Moon and the cause of flood basalt volcanism. Geologists need to look at alternate views as much as possible and not always accept certain ideas as if they were handed down from above. / I also admire your energy in traveling so much to make all of these presentations. It is a valuable service to your department in that you represent them well and to the audiences that you speak to. ... / Sincerely, Bob
