San Diego is an idea environment in which to study marine conservation ecology. Not only is the climate conducive to marine studies, but there are a variety of habitats to work in (seagrass beds, kelp forests, mudflats, rocky reefs, salt marshes, and intertidal zones, to name some). Moreover, San Diego is a biodiversity hot spot, containing diverse terrestrial and marine ecosystems. A conservation focus is maintained in our lab and by the ecology program area as a whole, and is important because of the variety of threats to organisms and habitats caused by our growing community.

The main campus of San Diego State University is located in eastern San Diego. This is where our lab and offices are housed, in addition to facilities and equipment for storing and processing samples. SDSU also maintains a suite of common use facilities that allow students and faculty to perform a variety of chemical, microbiological, and genetic analyses. Most of our field research takes place in San Diego Bay, Mission Bay, and the kelp forests of Pt. Loma and La Jolla, all of which are approximately 8 miles from the SDSU campus. We access these research sites with our lab truck and the small boats that are owned by SDSU, including Tethys, our lab's 18' skiff. SDSU docks small boats at Sea World Marina in Mission Bay, and the remainder of our boats are held at the new SDSU Coastal Waters Laboratory, located on San Diego Bay. This laboratory, nearing completion, will contain wet lab space, offices, a dive locker, a recirculating and flow-through seawater system, and an outdoor mesocosm facility for housing organisms and conducting experiments.
