A physician assistant (PA) is a health
professional licensed by the state or certified by a federal employer to
practice medicine with the supervision of a phyisician.
PAs perform a wide range of medical duties, from
basic primary care to high-technology specialty procedures that were
traditionally performed by a doctor. PA education also prepares physician
assistants to deal with many medical emergencies. PAs
act as first or second assistants in major surgery, and provide pre-and
post-operative care and often spends extra time counseling patients on ways
to stay healthy.
As part of the physician/PA team, PAs diagnose and treat illness and injuries and can
exercise a degree of autonomy in their decisions. PAs
are increasingly recognized as quality health care providers. In some rural
areas where physicians are in short supply, PAs
serve as the only providers of health care, conferring with their supervising
physicians and other medical professionals as needed and as required by law.
They can meet the needs of patients in a variety of clinical and hospital
settings. There are more than 25,000 clinically practicing PAs in the United States today.
