STAT 671: Statistical Computing

Group Projects:

As mentioned on the syllabus, the group project grade is based on a 20 minute presentation during the last week of classes and a paper less than 10 pages in length due at 3:00 pm on Sat. December 18; though I recommend you finish the paper by the last day of classes.
In addition, attendance during the presentations will be counted towards your project grade. If you miss any of the presentations, you will lose project grade points.

Presentation schedule: Twenty minutes each in GMCS 325

Monday December 6

Data Mining: Denaro, Larkin, Richards
Bootstrap application for the ceiling effect: Au
Monte Carlo methods in medical research Walker and Wang

Wednesday December 8 (start at 6:50 pm)

MCMC and the Ising model: Klein and Monday
Regnerative simulation: Huang, Liu, Zhuang
Independent component analysis: Xiong, Yang, Yoo
Simulated annealing: Artamonov, Friedman, Zhu

As part of the project, you will read articles in the literature on the topic and analyze data or perform simulations to illustrate the techniques/methods studied.
Each group will meet with me on a fairly regular basis to report progress and discuss further project work. In particular, I will give each group, where applicable, a paper or two to read.
We will then choose a data application or simulation exercise to illustrate the technique you have learned.

Requirements on the paper:

Maximum 10 pages of text (could be less) not including figures, tables, and bibliography;
12 pt font, one inch margins, single-spaced;
All figures and tables clearly presented and labeled at the end of the paper. All computer code in an appendix.
