Intercultural Ambassadors Program
IA
Teacher Application due October 31, 2008.
All Grades, All Subject Areas

Intercultural Ambassadors are carefully selected and trained international undergraduate students from San Diego State University who visit classrooms throughout San Diego County every spring. Over the course of three visits to the same class, planned in conjunction with the teacher, the "Ambassadors” share their cultures through personal stories, literature, geography, visuals and other artifacts.

After 24 years of offering this service for free, recent budget cutbacks have forced ISTEP to charge $150 per classroom. If you are interested in your school participating in the 2008/2009 program, please contact Elsie Begler at (619) 594-2412 or email Begler@mail.sdsu.edu or to apply, click here.

Constitutional Competition

Grade 8

Every January, students from San Diego County middle school participate in the annual Constitutional Competition at San Diego State University to demonstrate their knowledge of the United States' Constitution and Bill of Rights as part of an innovative educational program entitled "We the People... The Citizen and the Constitution." After completing a special curriculum students testified on constitutional issues in a simulated congressional hearing before a panel of community representatives. Judges included educators, attorneys, business owners, radio personalities and members of the Elks Lodge. Some schools that have participated are: Cajon Valley, La Mesa, Greenfield, Oak Grove, Hillsdale, Montgomery, Van Avery, Meadowbrook and Black Mountian. Thanks to all the students for all their hard work!

Darwin, 150 years of evolution

Darwin’s Impact on Contemporary Thought and Culture – A Year-long Series of Events in 2009
International Studies Education Project (ISTEP) has been selected to participate in the organization of SDSU’s College of Arts and Letters events celebrating 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of “On the Origin of Species” throughout 2009.  ISTEP will also be coordinating those events with the many others happening in the San Diego region.  Check the Darwin web site for updates as the events are published.
