ROHAN and MAIL

Students enrolled at SDSU can create their own Email account by logging into the WebPortal and clicking on the button titled Get a ROHAN/Email account. An account will be added. The account information will be displayed on the screen, and will be emailed to the student's email address on file with the WebPortal.

An enrolled Student is defined as a student who is registered for classes during the current semester. Once the username and password are received, the account will be active until one semester after the last semester completed at SDSU.

Faculty and Academic Staff may obtain an Email account on ROHAN by completing the #0510 ROHAN Computer Account Application form (available in LL-200 and BA-134 or by printing a copy).

OR

Faculty and any Staff may obtain an Email account on the MAIL server by requesting an account via the World Wide Web form at URL -- http://tns.sdsu.edu/helpdesk/email.html.

Guidelines for Responsible Email Use

The following characteristics of Email make it an extremely useful tool:

  • Messages can be forwarded or replied to easily and quickly.
  • Electronic mail has the potential for reaching a wide audience.

These features can also easily be misused. For example, once you send an Email message:

  • It may be forwarded, re-forwarded, printed, or permanently stored by any recipient.

Email does not convey the subtleties of body language, voice intonation, or other cues with which we express meaning.

  • Avoid attempts at irony or sarcasm.
  • The most effective Email is short, clear, and relevant.

If a message makes you angry or upset, allow time to pass before responding.

  • You may better understand the sender's meaning.
  • Your reply will be more moderate when your anger has subsided.

Sometimes Email is incorrectly addressed. If you receive a message intended for someone else:

  • Return it and let the sender know it was sent incorrectly.

Most Email systems allow responses to be sent to all recipients of a message. Consider whether this is appropriate before using this feature. It may be better to reply to only the sender.

  • Avoid indiscriminate forwarding of messages.
  • If you have doubts about forwarding a message, ask permission from the sender first.

Information useful to one person may be unnecessary to another.

  • Consider your distribution list carefully.
  • Avoid unnecessary proliferation of messages.

Email messages are files, and take up computer space, just like any other data.

  • Check your mailbox periodically.
  • Delete saved mail which is no longer needed.

Just remember: The proper use of electronic mail comes down to common sense and good citizenship!

Further information about using Email on the Internet may be found in the Handout #0200 Guide to Using ROHAN. See the Miscellaneous Internet Questions section for Email questions or call 594-5261.

Remote Access Services

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Campus Dial-In

SDSU has a dial-in modem pool consisting of 56k modems dedicated to provide free, unlimited Internet access to faculty and staff. However, students only have access to 48 SDSU campus modems. These 48 modems provide:

  • POP Email Capabilities to ROHAN and Mail
  • Limited connection time of 2 hours per session
  • Access to news, ftp, mail, and web servers on the SDSU campus network
  • The ability to download student licensed software from SDSU server sites
  • Web access to SDSU information only. Students must have an account with an outside service provider such as AOL, AT&T Worldnet, etc. to be able to have unlimited web access.

Telecommunication & Network Services (TNS) manages the SDSU dial-in modem pool and maintains the campus data communications network, SDSUnet, as well as the coaxial cable backbone that supports SDSU's cable TV access. TNS also provides a variety of data communications and related services to faculty and staff in the planning, design, procurement and installation of new network connections; and in moving, changing, and repairing existing connections. For more information, see URL -- http://tns.sdsu.edu/network/index.html or to request specific network services, call 594-5261.

Course Development and Delivery Services

Blackboard

Blackboard is an easy-to-use online course delivery and management system. Using Blackboard's graphical point-and-click interface, instructors can incorporate learning materials from word processing, audio & video, spread sheets, and presentation files without ever learning HTML. Features for students and instructors include:

  • Course Announcements and Calendar
  • Threaded discussions
  • Real-time chat and whiteboard
  • Course Study Groups
  • Online File Exchange
  • ... And so much more.
Blackboard offers instructors two types of assessments options to determine student progress with their material. Surveys are anonymous and non-graded. Quizzes are graded and attach a user name to the individual results. Blackboard provides an item by item analysis of each survey, which make them a perfect choice for course evaluations and demographic inquiries. Quizzes are graded immediately and the results are automatically entered into the gradebook. An item analysis for quizzes is available, except for those created with random question pools.

For further information about Blackboard, please visit the Blackboard web site.

Electronic Course Reserves

Library and Information Access Electronic Course Reserves (ECR) is a web-based application offering access to course readings, links to the Library's electronic databases, course bulletin boards and chat rooms. The use of this service is especially encouraged for faculty members who wish to make their lecture notes, sample exams and homework solutions available, and who have large class sizes. A faculty member may have documents added to ECR simply by sending an email to ecr@rohan.sdsu.edu

ECR accepts most file formats. Just attach a file to the email with a note explaining the title of the document and the course being taught. Or... deliver the pages to be scanned to the Reserve Book Room desk, LA2201. (Pages that are to be scanned must be good quality copies.) Verification of receipt will be made to you, along with the password needed for your students to access the course. Please visit http://infodome.sdsu.edu/about/depts/reserve/ecr.shtml to learn more about the service.

Central Stores
(http://bus.sdsu.edu/Stores/stores.html)
(http://bus.sdsu.edu - Business Services)

Effective July 1, 2005, campus orders for Dell, Gateway, Hewlett Packard, and Sony are no longer processed through Central Stores. These requests for equipment and products should be sent to Contract and Procurement Management for processing via an online Oracle requisition.Ý This change will eliminate the separate process for purchasing those products and provide on-line status of your request. Because the on-line requisition process is no different than with other Oracle requests, the change from Central Stores to Contract and Procurement Management should be seamless.Ý Per standard practice, delivery to the departments will be handled through Receiving.

In some cases, site licenses of software are purchased for the entire university and are available from University Computing Operations (see the Site-Licensed Software section).
